Fred serves as Associate Pastor for Senior Adult Ministry.
Born and raised in San Antonio in a family of 10 children, Fred's lifelong journey in ministry began in a high school youth group, was nurtured by church counselors, encouraged by summer camp experiences as a song and recreation leader, and flourished in his marriage to his camp sweetheart, Laverne. They had two children before he graduated from Southwestern University. Youth Director positions and a summer seminar at Claremont School of Theology in Southern California led to scholarships and seminary there. After 20 years serving churches and districts in California, Hawaii, Nevada, and Arizona, Fred and Laverne returned to Texas to be closer to their children and grandchildren in 1998. Semi-retirement in Central Texas included interim and associate positions. The desire to be closer to grandchildren and daughter, Kim, FUMCR Children's Choir Coordinator, brought Fred and Laverne to Garland in 2005. Official retirement lasted only three months, as Fred was soon asked to serve here, part time, as Associate Pastor for Senior Adults.
Fred's ministry here has been invaluable as he has led Bible studies, preached, sung, conducted weddings and funerals, and coordinated countless events with the Senior Adult Council to keep senior adults active, involved, and connected. Fred's favorite things about FUMCR are its BIG size and the music it offers. He loves to go to movies, musical concerts, read and watch Masterpiece Theater. He considers his job here to be a blessing and looks forward to wonderful years of leadership ahead.
