Prayer Blanket Ministry
Click here to request a prayer blanket online.
Families or individuals who are members of First United Methodist Church Richardson may request a prayer blanket for persons facing critical illnesses or life crisis situations. A special blanket is also available for those in the military.
After a request is received, the blanket is prepared. Each Sunday before and after worship services, church members tie knots in the blanket’s fringe and say a prayer for the recipient. Blankets are taken to the recipients during the following week.
This ministry receives no church funds and is financed entirely by donations. Forms to request a prayer blanket are available in the brochure rack near the Information Desk in the Shawver Welcome Center. To volunteer in this ministry, to make a contribution, or to request a blanket, contact Prayer Blanket Coordinator, Joan Huddleston, 972.235.7378.
What is a prayer blanket?
Our church’s Prayer Blanket ministry makes prayers tangible to those who are having surgery or who are suffering serious illness or infirmity. Built into each blanket is the gift of prayer: the symbol of faith in God and in His power to comfort, strengthen and heal.
The Prayer Blanket ministry creates each blanket for an individual and labels it with that person’s name and an embroidered Methodist cross. The fleece rectangle is cut along the edges to create a deep fringe. Blankets will be placed in the sanctuary on Sunday mornings for prayers. Congregation members, friends and family, and the person who receives the blanket tie knots in the fringe while praying.
Especially for Military Service Personnel
For our soldiers small camouflage fleece pieces are embroidered with the Methodist cross and Psalm 4:8, "I will lie down and sleep in peace, for you alone, O Lord, make me dwell in safety."
