Baptism Classes

The sacrament of Baptism is an essential part of our initiation into Christ's church.  New members who profess their faith for the first time are baptized as a symbol of the remission of their sins and their commitment to Christian discipleship.  The United Methodist Church supports one baptism, so that those baptized in other Christian traditions are not re-baptized when they become United Methodist.  Because we believe that persons of all ages are recipients of God's redeeming love, we encourage and support the baptism of infants and children, as well as youth and adults.  Upon the baptism of children, the parents and the church family commit themselves to teach children the foundations of the Christian faith by word and example.  For children about 12 years old (sixth grade), we offer a systematic program of education and spiritual formation called Confirmation.  We believe that confirmation is an essential step in completing a child's commitment to Christian discipleship and full church membership.

We require participation in one baptism class for all youth and adults who desire baptism and all parents who request baptism for their children.  In this class, we discuss the meaning of Christian baptism, as well as the United Methodist understanding of the sacrament.  We also address questions about the logistics of baptism in the worship service.  Total class time is approximately one hour.  Childcare is available by request, please call three days ahead, 972-996-0116.
