Student Ministry Intern Posting

First UMC Richardson is seeking an undergraduate or graduate student who is called to ministry and wants to learn more about serving in a church to serve as a Student Ministries Intern from August 2016-August 2017 (an intern can reapply annually for up to three years). We are a large church serving over 6000 members and are committed to living out our mission: with open hearts and minds, we welcome people for Christ, grow people in Christ, and serve people with Christ. The Student Ministry Internship is for a year and begins in mid-August. Internships have the possibility of being renewed for the next academic year through a reapplication process. Interns are hired to help carry out our church's mission through building relationships with youth, as well as assisting with running trips, activities, and providing spiritual development . The position will provide leadership development and direct experience with planning, programming, teaching, and leading in ministry.

Qualifications:

  • High School Graduate over the age of 19 – preferably a local college undergraduate or graduate student
  • Previous experience in youth ministry as a participant or student leader is a plus
  • Must love working with junior high and senior high students, be able to relate to them, and enjoy building relationships with both students and volunteer staff team 

Responsibilities: 

  • Assist the Student Ministry Team in nurturing the spiritual development of junior and senior high youth
  • Teach Sunday school
  • Assist with junior and senior UMYF on Sunday nights
  • Participate in bible study on Wednesday nights from September-May
  • Lead UMYF and bible study, as necessary
  • Assist with planning and implementation of special youth events
  • Assist with youth leadership development by supporting and participating on the Council on Youth Ministry
  • Develop and maintain relationships with the youth for the purpose of discipleship, spiritual growth, and development
  • Coordinate and run group games during UMYF and on trips
  • Assist with maintaining and updating social media sites
  • Help plan and attend retreats, summer mission trips, lock ins/outs, and other events
  • Hang out with youth and have fun
  • Encourage spiritual maturity in the youth through assisting with coordination of and attendance at monthly service opportunities

Compensation:

Interns are compensated $650 a month for approximately 15 hours of work a week (mainly Wednesday nights and Sunday morning/evening). Costs associated with attending trips, retreats, and outings are covered by the church.
