UMW Spring Luncheon
Tue, Apr 12, 11:30 am - 1 pm, Ogden Fellowship Hall
United Methodist Women members and guests are invited to lunch and to learn more about the Opportunity School for Mentally Challenged Children, a UMW supported mission in Chennai, India.
In July 2015, Marie McCoy was thumbing through the UMW Response magazine and noticed that UMW supports a mission in Chennai, India. She was getting ready to fly there for a business trip, and decided to visit, since she was the 2015 Highland Park UMC UMW president and didn't know anything about this global mission. What she found there was the Opportunity School for Mentally Challenged Children run by the amazing Deaconess Kasthuri Devaraj and her team of teachers.
Marie made three more trips to India and started a faith-based charity in the US to help raise funds for a new school building to replace the Opportunity School's current structure that was deteriorating due to annual monsoon flooding. The school with 140 students was founded in 1969 by Methodist missionaries and is still making a difference, offering special education to children with learning disabilities to better enable them to become self-sufficient.
A love offering will be collected.
