Senior Adult Ministry

EXPERIENCE friendship with others, 60 and older  •  GROW in your relationship to God  •  SERVE others  •  SHARE the benefit of the depth of your life experiences with the church and community

    The Gathering

    The hub of FUMCR Senior Adult Ministry is this monthly gathering that includes games, lecture, lunch, and entertainment, all planned by the Senior Adult Council.

    Autumn Renewal Retreat

    Three days of:
      •  fellowship with old and new friends
      •  fun, relaxation and the beauty of Lake Texoma in the fall
      •  spiritual renewal connecting us to a deeper relationship with God
      •  morning watch overlooking the lake with Rev. Dan Flanagan
      •  morning Bible study Tuesday and Wednesday with Jonathan Bryant
      •  evening worship led by the music team and Rev. Joe Shafer

    Begin arriving at 1 pm on Monday afternoon.
    Orientation begins at 3 pm. Dinner and opening worship follow.
    Each morning after breakfast we have Morning Watch overlooking Lake Texoma.
    Bible study on Tuesday and Wednesday mornings will be led by JB Bryant.
    Enjoy some free time and lunch.
    In the afternoon we have choices for activity or just sitting and relaxing.
    Dinner will be followed by worship, then free time and game playing.
    We close our time together after breakfast on Thursday.

    Get to Know...

    Our evening preacher, Rev. Joe Shafer, was born and raised a farm boy in Cherokee, Oklahoma. Joe's passion in ministry is for Congregational Care, caring for people through crises and struggles. Joe has served churches in Oklahoma and North Texas, his final appointment being 18 years at Trietsch Memorial UMC, where he retired in 2015 after 52 years of ministry. Joe enjoys volunteering for Habitat for Humanity and North Dallas Shared Ministries. He and his wife Polly, have four children and eight grandchildren. They enjoy traveling and believe Mark Twain's quote, "Travel is fatal to prejudice, bigotry, and narrow-mindedness."

    Bible Study leader, JB Bryant, is a recent addition to our staff. He is finishing his M.Div. at Perkins School of Theology at SMU and is a certified candidate on the ordination track for Elder in the North Texas Conference. He and Emily will be married in August.

    Handyman Service - First Richardson Helpers

    A faith- and community-based handyman program of seniors helping other seniors in the community with minor home maintenance and repairs, with a key focus on safety issues. 972-996-0160

    Medical Equipment Loan Program

    The following items are available for loan, free of charge for as long as they are needed, from FUMCR:
      •  Bed rails
      •  Bed-side commodes
      •  Crutches
      •  Shower stools
      •  Tub transfer benches
      •  Walkers
      •  Wheelchairs

    Call Howard Kennedy, 972.661.9088, to borrow one of these aids, or ask about other similar items.

    If you have medical equipment that you no longer need, please consider donating it to this program.
