Observers of our culture claim that an underlying boredom is pervasive, and that many persons lead fragmented lives, lacking any overarching sense of purpose or direction. Henry David Thoreau is often credited with the claim that “Most men lead lives of quiet desperation, and die with their song still inside them,” whether triggered by a mid-life crisis, loss of a job or shattered career, wrecked marriage, or simply disillusion with the “same old same old”… a flat, colorless life affording little reason to look forward to the next day. Let’s consider certain helpful insights of psychology, and the relevance of faith.

Not all professing Christians experience the “blessed assurance” associated with vivid personal religious experiences like John Wesley’s. For those of us so lacking, are there other substantive grounds for our belief in God? Some persons find such ground in a new paradigm of God. For others, specific human needs and capacities provide such. And recently, certain researchers in the emerging field of neuroscience find intimations of a domain beyond… sacred, real and accessible. New paradigms, insights and intimations in theology, psychology and neuroscience… might they be helpful in your own faith journey?
