It's Not About Me

When visiting someone in the hospital, it is not my job to “fix” anything. I’m not the physician. When I am with a family after a loved-one dies, I cannot make the pain go away. When I meet with people who are struggling with grief, my job is to help them enter into their pain, not run from it. My role as pastor is neither to cure, heal, nor fix. My role is to bear witness to both the reality of suffering and the goodness of God.

A fundamental belief of the protestant faith is that we are all ministers. The challenge for us when we minister (as I do) to those who are in long-term facilities, whether independent living, assisted living, nursing homes, skilled nursing, or hospice, is to minister effectively to them.

The physical allure of this place isn’t why my family and I have decided to make FUMCR our church home. It’s because someone saved me a seat in choir rehearsal when I was brand new and didn’t know anyone. It’s because a Sunday school teacher made an extra effort to get to know my kids so they felt more comfortable going to a new classroom. It’s because a greeter in the balcony remembered our names and told us how happy she was to see us again. It’s because the communion servers look my kids in the eyes and tell them “Jesus loves them.”
