BIG Sunday School

Sundays, July 13 - Aug 3, 9:45-10:45am, Coleman Family Hall

Explore the United Methodist Social Principles with us in a special combined Sunday School series led by our pastors and retired clergy. This class is open to all adults: classes, groups, and individuals. We'll dive into the guiding values that shape our lives as United Methodists:

  •  The Natural World (All Creation) - July 13 with Rev. Scott Luginbill
  •  The Economic Community - July 20 with Rev. Cheryl Bishop
  •  The Social Community - July 27 with Rev. Sarah Marsalis-Luginbill
  •  The Political Community - Aug 3 with Rev. Keith Head

Each week, we’ll engage with Scripture, reflect on the church’s teachings, and consider how these principles challenge and guide us in living out our faith—in our church, our neighborhood, and the wider world.

Breakfast will be provided courtesy of the FUMCR Foundation.

Resources

Week 1:
English Version Social Principles 2020/2024
Here is a free PDF copy of the Social Principles you can use during the class or after for your reading. Note these are printed in the Book of Discipline 2020/2024 as well in a standalone Social Principle booklet printed by Cokesbury.

Social Creed of the UMC & Litany
Here is the link to our social creed of the United Methodist Church along with a litany reading.

Church & Society Index of Topics to Social Principles
The Index of Topics is a quick way to find the Social Principles subject by identifying the page number in the newly adopted Social Principles booklet. The UMC Resolutions listed without a Social Principles page number were newly adopted at the 2024 General Conference, Charlotte. The page numbers with the Social Principles topic correlate to the 2025-2028 Social Principles booklet.

FUMCR Missions (Church & Society and Green Team)
Here you can find links to First United Methodist Church Richardson's Church and Society committee as well as our Green Team that are discussed during week 1 of our class.
